Your Conservatory and Decorating Overview

Decorating Conservatories Should Be Fun

Undoubtedly a conservatory is a fantastic addition to any home. Thanks to the uPVC windows and uPVC doors used to construct modern conservatories they are a space which can be used 365 days a year. Conservatories can be enjoyed by the whole family as a comfortable area to relax and unwind. When it comes to decorating a conservatory it can be quite daunting as it is like no other room in your house and you want to ensure it ties in with the rest of your home.
Thanks to the uPVC windows, uPVC doors and the glazed roof conservatories are light and airy spaces which allow the light to flood in. However you may find that in the summer the sunlight is too bright and installing blinds or shutters can allow you to control the amount of light which beams in to your conservatory. This is particularly useful if you plan to watch a TV in the conservatory as you will be able to stop the glare of sunlight on the screen. Not only will blinds or shutters be useful for these practical reasons but they can also help to improve the aesthetics of your conservatory.
Conservatories were originally designed as an area to grow plants in and although now they are used for far more purposes they are still a great place to grow plants and you are able to grow many varieties which would not survive elsewhere in your home or garden. Plants and flowers can really help to improve the decor and add colour to your conservatory they also bridge the gap between your inside and outside space.
Although the majority of modern conservatories are glazed and the frame is made using uPVC windows and uPVC doors which require no decoration there are often dwarf walls and the area where the conservatory meet the house which does require decoration. As conservatories are such light and airy spaces you can often use strong bold colours which would be too much else in other area of your house but would look great here.
Decorating a conservatory can often seem like a daunting task however it does not have to be and should be fun. It is like no other room in your house and this allows you to be more creative and use colours which you may not be able to use elsewhere in your house.

How to Decorate My Conservatory

Conservatory is the most admirable place and is considered the room that captures the attention of each family member. If you have one in your house, you should be very careful with the selection of items for its decoration. This room has its own significance because of its unique structure of glass walls. It will not be inappropriate if we call conservatory a temperature room. This room has an exceptional exterior and its interior should be very selective. There are a few tips to decorate a conservatory:
· First, look for furniture pieces for your conservatory. The selection of furniture should be according to the space and requirements of your life style.
· Greenery and planting is an essential item. While buying plant for your conservatory, keep in mind that you have to put indoor plants that can even grow in high temperature and excessive heat.
· The excessive and plentiful light is the distinguished feature, so there should be blinds on the windows, because curtains will hide the natural scenery that is the big advantage of a conservatory.
· The furniture should be very comfortable and the color selection should be suitable.
· You can choose the furniture pieces according to your space and your family members.
· A dining table can be placed in one corner to use it as a dining room for the whole family.
· You can also stick a couch and sofa cum bed to take some rest there.
· Decor in conservatory depicts your aesthetic sense therefore do not try to add a lot of stuff in your conservatory. Just place two or three excellent decoration pieces in that room having a lot of natural stuff for furnishing.
· Conservatory is the room for whole family so you can place a stylish book and newspaper rack to for those who are interested in reading.

A conservatory is a wonderful way to enjoy nature without actually being in nature. Panes of beautiful glass are all that stand between you and the elements, which makes for a wonderful escape but leaves you with a unique decorating situation.

That is a whole lot of windows to choose treatments for! Thankfully, there are many different options available today; here are a few tips for choosing the best window treatments for your conservatory.

Accentuate:

The first thing you want to decide is whether you want a window treatment that will fade into the background unobtrusively or something that will accentuate the natural scene all around you. If you want to let nature shine all alone with no competition in your conservatory, sheer blinds are your best choice.

On the other hand, you may want to accentuate nature by choosing blinds that reflect the palette around you; natural wood is a good option. There are also various natural colours greens, browns, creams and blues.

Roof:

Conservatories are unique in that they are 90% glass or more, this means there are angles that are more difficult to cover. You will need to decide if you are going to use window treatments for the entire room, which includes the ceiling. One option you may want to consider is a pleated blind that will disappear when fully retracted and provide shade during the summer months.

Installation:

Once you have chosen your favorite conservatory blinds you will have the issue of installation. If you are good with do it yourself projects you may be able to install these blinds yourself. However, even for the handiest conservatories pose a few unique challenges. Measuring will be a chore to say the least and in order to create a wonderful area the measurements will need to be exact. Of course then there is the business of actually hanging your conservatory blinds. Many retailers offer professional installation for a small added fee or include full measuring and fitting services within their quotations.

Benefits of Conservatory Blinds:

When you have a room made of mostly glass, sunlight can be pretty intense. During the cold winter months this can be a benefit, you can enjoy the snow all around you while basking in warm sunshine. However, in the summer intensified sunshine can be quite uncomfortable which is where conservatory blinds with solar reflective materials can come in handy. The right blinds can give you superior sun and glare protection, allowing you to enjoy the conservatory all year round.

Conclusion:

A conservatory makes a nice addition to any home, but it also presents a unique decorating situation. This is particularly true when it comes to covering all these windows. Conservatory blinds come in many colour and style varieties to suit nearly any taste and can be motorised to make opening and closing your many blinds convenient and simple. Bask in the sun during cold winter months and block harmful UV rays in the summer by installing stylish conservatory blinds.

2011 Steeples and Cupolas for Decoration Details

STEEPLES & CUPOLAS
MANUFACTURER
As early pioneers in the use of fiberglass (FRP) for architectural applications, Fiberglass Specialties enjoys a rich heritage of meeting their customers' needs through constant innovation and attention to details. Now the leader in the industry, they invite you to explore the possibilities Fiberglass Specialties has to offer.
PRODUCT PRESENTATION
Fiberglass Specialties produces the industry's largest line of standard steeple and cupola models. The entire line can be accessed in the CAD section of the Sweets CD, as well as Fiberglass Specialties' own website and printed literature. The standard line uses existing molds to assure economical pricing, while still allowing a wide range of options, such as crosses, louvers, windows, and custom colors.
In addition to this extensive standard line, Fiberglass Specialties' custom design team offers you maximum creative flexibility. More information is available in the "Custom" profile on the Sweets CD.
USES, APPLICATIONS
Fiberglass Specialties steeples and cupolas are suitable for churches, as well as a wide variety of commercial buildings, including schools, banks, shopping centers, hotels, and apartment buildings.
Cellular Applications: Because FRP is "Transparent" to Radio Frequencies, cellular and PCS antennas can be housed inside fiberglass steeples to provide coverage in areas which restrict the use of antenna towers. Fiberglass Specialties was among the earliest to use this innovative concept.

MATERIALS
Fiberglass Specialties steeples and cupolas are fabricated by permanently bonding an internal steel structure to an outer shell of FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester). The result is a rigid, durable structure that requires virtually no maintenance. The finish is an integral part of the FRP laminate; unlike paint, the surface will not peel off. This eliminates the cost of repainting associated with other materials.
ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION
Most steeples and cupolas are shipped in several stack-able pieces. Each component is pre-assembled at the factory to assure ease of installation. Assembly and installation vary from model to model, but typically involve simply stacking and bolting together several components. A crane and some special rigging may be required. Roof pitches are pre-cut to customer's specifications, requiring only minor field trimming to fit the roof.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Fiberglass Specialties' expert sales team and design team is available to assist you. By utilizing the latest technology, including Auto Cad, e-mail, and a functional website, they save you time and money during the design and specification phase.
Enchanting us for centuries, cupolas capture the serenity and beauty of the past. Adding sophistication, class and a little country charm to your rooftop.
1. Cupolas add value to your exterior buildings whether remodeling or new construction. Cupolas have a history that many architectural features just can not match, creating a dramatic exterior and a welcoming atmosphere.
2. Each cupola is individually made to the customers' specific preference. In order to look their best, cupolas need to be sized proportionately to the building it will be placed upon. It is the manufactures job to help you select the cupola that best fits your vision, providing balance and proportion. The goal is to find one that fits the roof enhancing the look without overpowering it.
3. Handmade by Quality Craftsman. Built of the finest weather resistant materials by skilled craftsman. Cupolas have grown synonymous with quality and craftsmanship that makes them durable year after year. An example of American heritage is a cupola painted white with a copper roof.
4. Offer you the freedom of choice. To meet your needs their are numerous designs to choose from. Whatever your preference, there is a cupola for you. When one wants natural light the cupola can be constructed with windows or a large cupola can form a whole floor. Providing a great view, or high altitude solitude to read a good book. They can also be built with louvers to provide attic ventilation. Whatever the choice they will add height and beauty to your roof.
5. Cupolas are constructed of durable materials. Built only of the finest weather resistant materials a reputable manufacture will know the appropriate material for the cupola... wood, metal or vinyl. The choice of the best materials and design will prove a long term investment. Quality construction and elegant design will age gracefully, instead of becoming dated.
6. Cut to fit the pitch of the roof. Roof pitch is a ratio for every inch a roof drops over every inch it extends horizontally. Typically a cupola will fit a six to twelve degree pitch. The bases of cupolas are cut to fit the pitch of the roof and must conform to the pitch to fit properly.
7. Installed for decorative purposes. After the pitch has been cut in the base of the cupola it is simply placed on the roof and caulked. They provide an ornamental structure often with windows and are wired to transmit light over the environment. Window cupolas will always appear smaller then the same sized louvered cupola on any building.
8. Functional Cupola. They are designed to naturally ventilate the structure it fits on. By placing cupolas on the roof, the hot stagnant air is released through the louvered sides. A functional cupola requires a hole be cut in the roof at least six inches less then the width and length of the base. Do not cut the supporting rafters or the ridge.
9. Create Exterior Decorative Accent. Custom features are a great way to achieve a one-of-a kind look. Cupolas can be built small enough to grace the roofline of a gazebo to large ones that form a top floor that one enters from the inside via stairs. A cupola gives a focal point and draws the eye to them, and when gazed upon they project beauty.
10. Cupolas are built to last. The size of a cupola is determined by the wall height, length and width of the building they are to be placed on. For longevity it is important that they be sealed properly to provide durability, strength and workability. How much they weigh is important as there can be load stress on the buildings frame, especially with large ones. Cupolas are built to last and often serve as a landmark.
Serenity and beauty of the past---a cupola is designed to last, with character to capture the spirit of early American architecture. Placed in a prominent position on the roof, cupolas are a decorative architectural accent.

Have you ever wondered what those small buildings are that are perched on top of a building? It is a cupola! They can also be called a pavilion when they take the form of a small, round Roman temple.

Cupolas were originally designed for functionality, as a ventilating system. Now they are placed on the roof tops of houses, garages and businesses for decoration giving the buildings antique appeal. Cupolas beautify any structure. They draw the eye upward and create curb appeal with their Early American architecture.

When thinking of purchasing a cupola, one needs to be careful not to purchase without thought of size and the architectural style of the building it will be perched upon. One wants the cupola to add balance to create the appearance that it was not just add on, but to create an asymmetrical appeal that gives your buildings to look their absolute bests.

In order to look their best, cupolas need to be sized proportionately to the building it will be placed on. The size of the cupola is determined by the height, length, and width of the building it will be placed upon.

In selecting the right size for the building, a good rule of thumb is at least 1 inch of cupola base for every foot of unbroken horizontal roof line. Example:  An unbroken roof line of 30 feet would require at least a 30 inch cupola base.

If the building is higher than 1 story or the roof is steep, it is recommended one increase the size of the cupola. A too small cupola could have the appearance of a bird house. Not creating the curb appeal a properly sized cupola would provide.

The cupola straddles the roof much like a horse back rider straddles the back of a horse. Because of this, cupolas are designed to accommodate different roof pitches of the structure it will sit upon.

Window cupolas will always appear smaller than the same sized louvered cupola on any building. How the cupola looks when seen on the ground will change once placed on the roof. Therefore, it is very important to measure appropriately to obtain the high quality results one wishes when creating curb appeal.

If the building is greater than 100 feet long use multiple cupolas. A solution would be to have a large cupola in the middle with smaller ones at each end or place two cupolas one at each end.

It is extremely important to properly seal the cupola against the elements. When looking to purchasing a cupola find out if it comes in a box to be built and sealed once received or if it arrives completely sealed by skilled professional craftsman.

Looking to update your exterior buildings without breaking the bank? A properly sealed, well proportioned cupola will add a finishing touch to both new construction and existing buildings. Cupolas are a timeless masterpiece, a great way for adding curb appeal. Hamblen County Courthouseroof cupola,
Not many counties can say they still have their very first courthouse still in use, but Hamblrn County can. The county was formed in 1870 and for a few years court met in a Morris town store.
The courthouse was designed by architect A.C. Bruce of Knoxville. He drew up three plans, costing from ,000 to ,000, and county leaders chose the most expensive plan. The final construction cost came in at ,750 and was finished in 1874.
The original main entrance faces south and includes a double balcony for speakers at rallies. The courtroom is on the second floor. Originally, there were two ground floor rooms without windows called "The Dungeons."
The building is three stories, but since it is built on a slope, today’s entrance on the north side makes it appear two stories. it is built with a tall central pavilion with slightly lower wings flanking the center, all of which are embellished with corner quoins. A tall, mansard-roofed cupola is atop the center of the roof. The rest of the roof is a combination of low hip and gable construction with mansard roof components.
An expansion was made in the early 1950′s as matching wings were added to either side, matching the original design. An interior redesign was complete in 1968. Today, the building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Latest Architectural wood columns pictures and ideas

Tree trunks undoubtedly provided inspiration for the first columns ever used in architecture. To this day, wood remains a valid and rather high-end option for both exterior and interior architectural columns. Here I have a little collection of various architectural wood columns.
Perhaps the most important distinction is whether or not to emphasize wood as the material used for any given architectural column. A coat of acrylic paint can easily make a wood column resemble a plastic or composite column, at least if you are looking at a distance. However, for a truly authentic look wood can be irreplaceable. Depending on the level of detail these columns can be quite pricey.

Painting wood columns allows designers to emulate and define many traditional styles, even the most extravagant.

Your second option is to expose the natural texture of the wood column. This is particularly desirable if you have the budget for elaborate carving.

Finally, in many cases the look of wood columns is needed even when there is no money to be spent on authentic wood.

Single columns  a word of caution

Here is a word of caution regarding the use of single architectural columns. The article was published in "The Civil engineer and architect's journal" in 1848, but the advice can still be heeded.

"The idea of erecting single colossal columns as monuments and architectural objects, was, no doubt, borrowed by the Romans from Egyptian obelisks. Inasmuch as they are both lofty, upright objects, exceedingly well calculated to show at a considerable distance, the column and obelisk agree; but they also differ quite as much, and the difference is decidedly in favor of Egyptian taste. Whereas the obelisk is evidently a monument—a pillar erected to record some fact or facts, or dignify some locality, and is every way fitted by its shape to stand as an insulated, independent monolith, the column plainly expresses itself to be a component member of a fabric; therefore taken by itself alone, meaningless,—in the condition of a verb without a noun, or a noun without a verb. Not only does the column suggest the idea of a super-incumbent architrave, for supporting which it is intended,—'but detached from it, acquires a top heavy and unstable look, the very reverse of that attending the pyrumidum in which the obelisk is made to terminate, and which produces an obtuse apex, instead of the whole being prolonged to a sharp point, like a spire. Except its general proportions as to height, there is nothing that recommends a column tor officiating in lieu of an obelisk. The so employing it manifests very great poverty of invention and barrenness of ideas,—the inability to devise new and more appropriate forms for new purposes. What is characteristic in the column, considered as an architectural member, destined to support either a horizontal entablature or an arch springing from its capital, ceases to have propriety or meaning in a pillar erected merely as either an ornamental object or a votive monument. Such monument may still be a pillar, but it should be one expressly adapted to its peculiar purpose ; therefore, the less it resembles any of the so-called " orders," the better. In this respect, the Rostral column possesses a decided advantage: it shows itself most plainly to be neither more nor less than a trophy pillar. A column of that kind does not look like a fragment of a building. In a building, such form for the columns would be preposterous. To employ Architectural columns as detached monumental pillars, savors of pedantic and puerile conceit, akin to that which during the Elizabethan period fashioned chimney shafts into columns, designed, more orthodoxly than tastefully, according to some one of the "regular" orders."

Decorative porch column ideas

Among all architectural elements columns are possibly the most sensitive to lighting, because their unique shapes are only revealed when just the right combination of light and shade is achieved. In this example, an additional effect is created by the shadows of the beams falling on the columns.

It may appear that the railing is missing from this porch. The point is however, that when designing porch columns you have to achieve a balance between creating privacy and being able to enjoy the view from the porch. Do you have a nice view or are you willing to sacrifice it in order to have a stunning facade?

In the design below, the same type of columns used on the porch is also used inside the house, tying the two elements together. It is absolutely essential, however, that the columns inside are also independently relevant to the space that they occupy. They must perform a certain function and they should not be crowding the room.

Architectural columns that we use today are generally inspired by Greek and Roman architecture. It is often forgotten that in those days columns (as well as statues) were not usually left white. Instead, they were often painted. The design that you see below follows that particular tradition. Adding some color to the columns can help keeping a certain style of the house that you chose, without making a leap to the neo-classical look that is almost inevitably created by columns.

Porch columns have to work well with the entire design of the house. Notice how in this design the columns are well balanced by the external woodwork and the elaborate front entrance door.

In this design, there is very little space to work with, but the columns define the area so well that the small porch is transformed into a grand entrance.

You can notice that the columns in this design are quite simple looking, but they create a backdrop for some very elaborate railings.

Again, lighting is essential. Porch lights should be installed with full awareness of the columns. This way the columns will look very pronounced and "3d" even at night, in the absence of natural light.

Pictures of architectural columns in interior room design

In this interior design example, two columns help define a room which would otherwise appear too open and exposed to the hall space.

In this example, a single column allows to set apart a dining room space.

In this music room the main purpose of columns is to go with the theme of classical art and music:

Note the changing light as you go from area to area, even though the columns are identical. It creates an interesting effect and expands the space.

The columns define the room. They may also conceal a large unattractive wall in the back.

Trees and tree trunks were the original inspiration for architectural columns. This design brings us back to the basics, so to speak. If the columns are load-bearing, this allows to distribute the weight more evenly.

Column terms

If you are intending to shop for columns, it is very useful to know some terminology. A column with its surroundings is a complex architectural structure. Without knowing the right words you will not even understand your contractor or manufacturers' product information.
Abacus: A slab on the top of the capital of a column.
Acanthus: Any of various perennial herbs or small shrubs of the genus Acanthus, native to the Mediterranean and having pinnately lobed basal leaves with spiny margins and showy spikes of white or purplish flowers. Also called bear's breech.
Apophyge: An outward curve, called congé or scape, connecting the shaft of a Classical column to the fillets over the base and under the astragal beneath the capital.
Astragal: A narrow convex molding often having the form of beading.
Base: The lowest part of a structure, such as a wall, considered as a separate unit: the base of a column.
Capital: the upper part of a column that supports the entablature.
Column: A supporting pillar consisting of a base, a cylindrical shaft, and a capital.
Conge: An Apophyge
Echinus: A convex molding just below the abacus of a Doric capital.
Egg and Dart: A decorative molding consisting of a series of egg-shaped figures alternating with dart-shaped, anchor-shaped, or tongue-shaped figures.
Fillet: A thin flat molding used as separation between or ornamentation for larger moldings.
Flute: A long, usually rounded groove incised as a decorative motif on the shaft of a column.
Load-bearing: A structural element that supports the weight of other construction elements.
Necking: A molding between the upper part of a column and the projecting part of the capital.
Pilaster: A vertical element projecting from a wall, with a base and capital.
Pillar: A vertical, noncircular masonry support.
Plinth: A block or slab on which column is placed
Post: A vertical element used to support a horizontal beam or lintel
Scotia: A hollow concave molding at or near the base of a column.
Shaft: The principal portion of a column, between the capital and the base.
Torus: A large convex molding, semicircular in cross section, located at the base of a classical column.
Volute: A spiral scroll-like ornament such as that used on an Ionic capital.

Decorative columns in the garden

If you really want to add columns to the number of design features you already have in your home, but there seems to be absolutely no aesthetic or structural justification for their use (it can happen!), take a look at your outside space. Garden columns are an old time favorite when it comes to dividing different areas in a park or simply providing some architectural interest. It is often that these columns do not perform any utilitarian function whatsoever. They can literally be freestanding, provided that their capitals are elaborate and visually appealing in their own right.

Still, it is much better if you can use your garden columns as planters or as support for hanging plants. Short columns that can be used as planter bases are often called pedestals. Such short columns can also look great in combination with sculptures, bird baths and solar lights.

You can even go for a ruin look that was very popular in Renaissance times and in Romantic gardens. Believe it or not, columns are actually manufactured to look broken and aged:

Columns in Windsor Guildhall: An architect's joke

Christopher Wren (1632 – 1723), a great English architect, at the client's request, installed four additional columns in the Windsor Guildhall. The client's concern was that the roof was lacking structural support and was in danger of collapsing. Wren, who was not at all convinced that his design was structurally unsound, probably mumbled to himself something about the fact that the clients always ruin everything. Nevertheless, he built the four columns that apparently satisfied his critics.

The problem is, of course, that these columns do not reach the ceiling, and in fact support absolutely nothing. Upon very close examination, they turn out to be completely decorative! Hundreds of years later, the building still stands, complete with an architect's joke.

Have you been thinking of a way to add a special flair to your home, but didn't know exactly what to do to make it stand out? Have you ever thought about adding interior architectural mouldings to your home to make it a special one-of-a-kind designer home? Adding a decorative column to an area in your home can give your home a reflection of beauty and elegance. It will take your home from a regular house to a house of true beauty. A decorative column can make all the difference in the world to the appearance of your home.

A decorative column can be used for the interior or exterior. They all come pre-painted and have already been primed. You just need to choose a paint that is best for interior or exterior. You have the choice of full columns or half columns. A full column is commonly used for new buildings or for interiors, and half columns are generally used outside, or inside against a wall. Both of these columns can be used when you want to hide anything that is unsightly, or be used just to add beauty to the home. A decorative column can change the whole outlook of your house.

A decorative column comes in many different sizes and shapes. You are able to get them fluted or unfluted and fluted ones are better when you need to hide any steel uprights. You also have the choice of getting a narrowed decorative columns or a wide one, but you must make sure that you do not block any access to doorways when you make your final choice. They come in a range of lengths, and they can be cut down to fit any size easily. You will be given guidelines to follow when you order a decorative column.
